Awards and Upgrades

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport received $20.6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve the infrastructure around the airport. On September 22, 2016, this federally funded project received Envision rating system’s Silver award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (Wayne County Airport Authority, 2016a).

The restaurant and retail options that the McNamara Terminal has to offer also received recognition. P.F. Chang’s China Bistro recently received an award for “Best New National Brand Concept in the 2016 Excellence in Airport Concession” presented by Airports Council International – North America” (Wayne County Airport Authority, 2016b). The Italian restaurant, Andiamo, was also recognized as the “Best New Food and Beverage Concept in its class in the Airport Revenue News – 2016 Best Airport Concession Awards” (Wayne County Airport Authority, 2016b).

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Willow Run Airport were recognized for excellence with their Fire Fighting and Airport Rescue teams in Safety and Response. They are the only independent airport authority in the U.S. that has ever been given this distinction (Wayne County Airport Authority, 2016c).
